HB 1826: The Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Unions Act
In February of 2007, state representative Greg Harris introduced HB 1826, which would provide basic protections to both same-sex and opposite-sex couples in Illinois. Protections for couples would include inheritance rights, medical decision-making and hospital visitation rights.
Currently, HB 1826 has made its way through the necessary committees, and currently has 12 co-sponsors in addition to Rep. Harris. As of now, the bill is awaiting confirmation that the necessary support is in place before a vote will be called.
